Tauhara Geothermal Power Station – Delivering Advanced FRP Solutions for New Zealand’s Largest Renewable Energy Project

Maskell Productions Ltd. is proud to be working under Sumitomo Corporation as a key partner in the construction of the Tauhara Power Station in Taupō, New Zealand. This 174MW geothermal steam turbine power station will be Contact Energy’s sixth geothermal power station in the Central North Island and is set to significantly boost the country’s renewable energy capacity.

What We Delivered:

Our expertise in FRP (fiberglass-reinforced plastic) engineering has been essential to the successful delivery of various critical components of the Tauhara project, including:

  • FRP Pipeworks: We are responsible for all FRP piping systems, including both underground and above-ground pipelines, ensuring a robust, corrosion-resistant solution that will withstand the harsh geothermal environment.
  • Spool Installations: Our team expertly installed all FRP spools on-site, ensuring seamless integration with the power station’s infrastructure.
  • Barometric Seal: We provided a custom-designed barometric seal, a vital component in maintaining the power station’s efficiency and operational stability.
  • Cooling Tower Pipelines: Maskell Productions Ltd. also supplied and installed all FRP cooling tower piping, designed to handle high temperatures and demanding operational conditions.

Challenges and Coordination:

The project’s complexity required close coordination with Sumitomo Corporation, site contractors, and local partners to meet tight timelines and ensure precision in every phase of the installation. Our team’s ability to adapt and work collaboratively with on-site teams was key to overcoming challenges related to underground installations and working within the geothermal field’s dynamic conditions.

By delivering state-of-the-art FRP solutions, Maskell Productions Ltd. is playing a crucial role in this landmark project that will generate 1,420 GWh of renewable electricity per year, contributing to 3.5% of New Zealand’s total electricity needs and supporting the nation’s transition to a Zero Carbon 2050 future.
